Montepulciano - San Gimignano

The wines of Montepulciano

The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of the outstanding traditional Tuscan D.O.C.G wines. Sangiovese, here called “Prugnolo Gentile”, is combined with Canaiolo Nero, to produce a masterpiece. Wine with the appellation "Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG" must undergo an ageing period of at least two years, at least 3 years for qualification "riserva". Rosso di Montepulciano is a sort of a younger, "declassified" Nobile and was created so people could drink a more immediately accessible Nobile to age.

The wines of San Gimignano

Tuscany in central Italy is generally renowned for its red DOCGs; however, one supreme white wine arrived on the DOCG scene in 1993 under the name of Vernaccia di San Gimignano. It had already become the first Italian wine to be honored with the DOC classification in 1966.

DOCG rules stipulate that this white must be made from at least 85% Vernaccia and a maximum of 15% non-aromatic white grapes that are permitted in this region.
